Friday reading

Taoism is a philosophy or way of life that may have been started by a man named Lao Tsu (or Lao Tzu) who lived a little before Confucius, about 600 BC. Tao means the "way" or the "path". According to the traditional story, Lao Tsu worked as a librarian in the emperor's library (this was in the Eastern Chou dynasty).

Lao Tsu believed that the way to happiness was for people to learn to "go with the flow." Instead of trying to get things done the hard way, people should take the time to figure out the natural, or easy way to do things, and then everything would get done more simply. This idea is called "wu-wei", which means "doing by not doing".

Taken from here.

Life does not have to be full of friction. Sometime less is more.

  1. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

    "wu-wei", "Doing by doing nothing"

This seems to be the philosophy of the Weed Commisioner in Waukesha.

and it's working because by doing nothing now, the weeds will be all gone by December.

    "wu-wei"

  2. Wu Weed would mean NO WEED... That should be the goal.

There is a such title as a "weed commissioner", and not in a Cheech and Chong movie?

  3. The Tao Te Ching is part of my daily readings. I like to put several interpretations of the same chapter up at the same time and compare them.

  4. Yes...there is an official "Weed Commissiner" in Waukesha. However it apparently is a desk job that does not require actually going around the City to inspect.

TRY THIS: Take a drive into this city, along any of the so called "gateways", as if you were a first-time visitor.

What would your first impression be?

  5. Tao Te Ching is too deep for my simple mind, I am more of a follower of Zhuangzi.

:) I think first time visitors are all in fear of being lost in the supposed all one way streets of Waukesha, and not paying much attention to anything else!
