My open letter to mayoral candidates

I've found this open forum by Mr. Scrima. I like to share my limited vision of the certain aspect of downtown Waukesha... BUT I am a recovered Facebook addict and I can not and will not reactivate my many, many accounts.

To Mr. Scrima and Mayor Nelson, here are my ideas:

Downtown Dog Park:

Following the lead of one important member of Waueksha community, I have an idea with Bethesda park. To privately fund this project, this park will be a memorial park with bricks sold to pet owners. There will also be a healing spring for the dogs and the owners. The bridge...rainbow bridge. It can tie in with GPA-Wisconsin greyhound gala every year, and Clarke Hotel is dog friendly. ( Downtown Waukesha Greyhound Walks? ) HAWS would be great as a partner as well.

Most dog lovers will agree, you know the neighborhood once you have a dog and know the other dog people.

The issue: the river walk is NOT dog friendly nor it allows dogs.

Harley festival:

Waukesha as the midwest Sturgis, once a year. Waukesha is set up for it.

Waukesha Public Market

Model after Milwaukee Public Market.( put it north of the river with tons of parking?) The bridges are all there.

Taste of Waukesha

Not my idea but I love it. How about some local foodie contest, I like to sign up.

The underground tour of Waukesha? Just a thought.

If downtown Waukesha want to thrive more, the parking issue MUST be addressed. The out-sourced parking ticket processing company is terrible, just go ask DMV. How about digital parking meter that take credit cards? How about a downtown merchant workers-only parking lot (and require so)?

I am not smart enough to know how to fix the water issue, but please have a long term solution!

But I do know.... You can not cut tax and spend more, and great ideas need money to make it real. Spend money where it needs to, and maximize the return, long term return.

Just to be 100% fair, I have to say that I missed the fundraiser for Mayor Nelson because I was working. I will go to Mr. Scrima's Listening session today on my day off. I do not have a vote, but I am pro-Waukesha and I am a property owner and a business owner. My chips are all in.

Public Opinion

From what I learned in Political Science 101, we do not have opinions but we are influenced to think we have one. With the Karl Rove's school of spin, it is really important for one to dig a little deeper so we don't become a mouthpiece of some other people's dark motive.

It is becoming apparent the hidden agenda and negative campaign are finding their ways to social media and traditional media. My rule is always that one should make up one's opinion through one's own observation and reasoning.

I read the SOUND OFF in Freeman and I am concerned that the column is now fallen to negative campaign battleground. I care about issues, and Waukesha has some. Can we deal with issues and solutions, please?

I am not interested at emotional talk points, just real solutions! The water issue is quite important, the states in the West are all up and armed about their water already, and we will soon see that here.

( "Water of life"... yeah....there is no cure for this...) Once again, I am not for either candidate, Dem Or Rep, left or right, but I am pro Waukesha!

Go to the President's House

You know, I am moving up in the food chain, I was invited to the President's House at Carroll University. It might have something to do that my professor Phil is now the Art Czar at Carroll.

I shaved and look pretty for the big art opening and reception for celebrated artist T. L. Solien. I even brought out my best suit, made in Taiwan of course. From a foodie point of view, the spread was awesome! Decent wine too, I mean, come on, thick slice of steak as finger food! It is too bad Kodiak kid could not make it.

I think I might have photographer Bill Lemke as a possible candidate to show in Galleria Edge sometime this year. I still have to talk to Phil about doing a collection of his nudes too. It will be interesting art to display for sure!

My next goal is to talk to Ms. P, perhaps pay her a visit in Colorado. I wonder if she would put together her collection for a show at Galleria Edge in the same time of the homecoming. I would also like to find Mr. Selle and offer the same as well. This is just my Carroll connections, not even the UWM professors I admire.

I also worked something out that instead of just the ongoing portfolio award for outstanding Senior art student, I will offer an open date for an art show in the gallery as well as part of the encouragement! It is so nice to have flexibility! Me...Happy.

Oh, I almost forgot to write about the art show. Mr. Solein's show is quite interesting. I have great affection for the group of three pieces on the far left corner as you walk in. There are certain confessional qualities in the self- portraits. If you have a chance, you should go and take a look.

I also reserved one piece of art work by Phil to go into my art collection. It will go well with the Brett Weston. I never would imagine I will come back to the fine art world in this way but I am enjoying it.

(Rich's customer: Are you tattoo artist by day, lawyer by night? Upon seeing me in my power suit. Detective Playa: Do you turn in your Man Card when you go to an art show? Upon seeing my lavender shirt and "monkey suit", I do not argue with anyone with a side arm.)

Spring is here!?

The Opening Day tickets I ordered for one of my long time customers and fellow Brewers fans arrived yesterday. This must be the first sign of Spring! Pretty soon there will be peanuts and bratwurst.

What would the lineup look like?

I think I will take a shot:

1. 2B Weeks
2. RF Hart
3. LF Braun
4. 1B Fielder
5. 3B McGehee/Gamel
6. CF Gomez
7. C.Zaun
8. SS Escobar
9. Pitcher

or

1. Gomez
2. Weeks
3. Braun
4. Fielder
5. McGehee/Gamel
6. Hart
7.Zaun
8. Escobar
9. Pitcher

Can this Gomez kid hit fastball? Maybe 1.Weeks 2. Gomez.

or

1. Weeks R
2. Escobar L
3. Braun R
4. Fielder L
5. McGehee/Gamel R/L
6. Hart R
7. Zaun S
8. Pitcher
9. Gomez R

Hart will be the big question mark, but the middle of the lineup seems solid.

I CAN NOT WAIT!

How about this?

Ian's pizza in former O'Brian's building? I am just dreaming by the way. I still like the idea of a hometown business like certain established Waukesha Deli to go in there. I do think people should really look into this. It is the last few spot in downtown Waukesha that has plenty of parking and really is great for a food establishment.

I do not know what kind of behind the scene activities is there, there were cars parked there here and there and I do believe people are really looking at this nice building. By summer time, the beautiful West End WILL be the trendy end of downtown Waukesha! I can't wait.

Change is in the air

I know our lives had been going through a lot of change: New shop, new building and tons of exciting possibilities. People around me are also making changes! Customers and friends who are part of my life are sharing all the news with me. I just want to congratulate Maia and Adam on the engagement and I do expect an invitation to the wedding but not sure we will make it! (It is in Fiji!) They are a very cute couple and will relocate to Austin, TX.

A name from the past showed up in the news and we are sorry to hear his passing. I know we paid for many payments of his mortgage but nothing to show for. We are now concerned about certain staff of his that are very nice people.

We had a surprise gift from our neighbor C. and husband, we will use the design for our gift card! We are excited for all the development in the West End. It is happening!

Dave and Buster finally came to Wisconsin (next to DSW shoes, now this is a dangerous combo for couples! "Hey, hon, go to Dave and Buster and I will just go look around in DSW..."), now I am just waiting for IKEA!

It is really interesting that once an element is changed, everything seems to shift in this constant flux. Future is bright, we just have to keep on believing and make a positive difference!

The update from Flux

Jeremy, the owner of Flux Design came out for a meeting today. We collectively made some design and concept change and we all feel very good on what we all arrived at. The space is being designed with great care and we are really happy with the direction it is heading.

The updated time line will put the installation of the project in early April, and the Grand Opening sometime in late April or early May.

Stay tuned, perhaps we will have some teaser pictures ( if it is okay with Flux )to share soon. We are very excited and we are all seeing the possibilities and have a better understanding of the steps ahead!

For one thing, Waukesha better be ready for us. It will be a destination just for the interior design alone, and wait, we do tattoos here too! (Waukeshatattoo.com)

New business at the West End!

Our neighbor C. announced the big news yesterday at the impromptu donuts connoisseur convention at Waukesha Tattoo Company. There will be a high class salon going in two doors down! It is also another property owner-operator deal and it stays in her family! The demo is starting in early March, you know things are happening in the beautiful West End!

An interesting idea is being suggested around to have one unnamed local deli relocated to the formerly O'Brian's building across street. The foodie in me gives it two thumbs up with that idea! Daily Double, gourmet soup and awesome dessert.... I think it would be a great location for that business!!! Please, pretty please? ^^ We promise a nice flow of tattoo customers if that is the first eatery they see out of our big windows! Not counting the three big foodies working here!!! (Now I am dreaming of corn beef...)

For curious foodies

These are for me to say YUM!

Business lunch for one

I was not expecting this but my first appointment was sick, so I had sometime to go fulfill my mission. The mission: try ( Clarke Hotel )Black Trumpet's fish fry. Despite some negative web comment I read, I decided I have to eat there to have a real critique.

It was really a business lunch for one. In the corner of the dining, a group of business people gathered. Mark from Edward Jones came over and said hi. We talked about the market a bit with CNBC on the flat screen at the bar.

I ordered the fish fry lunch, but I had to try their signature Five Lilies soup. I must say it is a very interesting dish. It is like French Onion but base with cream of mushroom. It reminded me of the baked potato soup from Machine Shed or Thunder Bay but no potato and much more refined.

The lunch fish fry was very interesting as well. My one criticism is that the breading is so unique that the fish became secondary. I won't mind seeing this breading on salmon, some fish with very bold taste. It is a refined fish fry however. Sometime you feel like a grease spoon fish fry, and sometime a refined fish fry will also be great! I am more of a freak for good potato pancakes, and I do judge fish fry with the greatness of the potato pancakes first. It came with good french fries for lunch here.

Overall, I did enjoy the lunch, it was good quality food and good service. I love the dining room and the getaway experience right in the middle of downtown Waukesha. I do not understand the slam by some negative web people.

On the return I took the river walk and it was beautiful. Sun is out and Fox river flows. Do I dare to say the S word? I better not jinx it.

Freeman article

I know everyone in the world thinks newspaper is a dying media, I am one of those guys still enjoy newspaper in hand and a cup of coffee.

Waukesha's very own Freeman was nice enough to do an article about us yesterday, and we are very happy to have our view expressed on what we want to do with our business. One thing was misquoted or need to be clarified is that we do not tattoo young kids with mommy's permission, you have to be 18 years old with acceptable pictured ID to prove it, period. I talked to the editor and she listened and did understand my concern. I think she will run a clarification today.

People of Waukesha still read Freeman religiously to find out about local news and events, and I think the newspaper influenced the mayoral primary a lot. Mr. Scrima is really going all out on the media blitz. With vote counts in the thousands, it is an effective campaign tool. Mayor Nelson, if you are reading, you do have to recognize the value and impact of the hometown newspaper.

Freeman is running a special which we did sign up. It is 8 paid weeks + 8 free weeks for like 20 bucks. Pretty good deal, huh? They are a big supporter of downtown Waukesha and it is only fair we support them back! :)

The Main Street conspiracy

I feel the threats, but I do not know where they are coming from.

I know there are people planning behind my back, but I can not identify them.

People are just jealous, I know, they wish they are the ones have our un-named shop mascot, but I am so paranoid that several kidnapping plots are in progress that I can not even post a photo of it or name it or describe it here.

People ask me why I don't display it outside, I think that is a subtle way of saying, "why don't you make it easier for us to take your mascot!?" Even though this Waukesha icon had been standing outside of Urban Abode before, as soon as I rescue it from the store closing sale, all the threats started to come in.

I installed security cameras just to protect this piece of Waukesha history and it is now hanging out in our lobby at Waukesha Tattoo Company. Yes, you can take a photo with it if you like, we even let you touch it. BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE IT!

I love my job!

Yes, I was tattooing someone's sausage.

Usinger's.

Clarke Hotel

I will be the first one to tell you that I was a non-believer. When I used to stand outside my former working place and watched this whole building changed into a hotel and suffered delay after delay, I just did not believe it will make it.

Now I am standing on the other side of the line as a business and downtown property owner, and I receive the inside scoop on promotions and downtown activity. I can tell you that Clarke Hotel is definitely a draw. Do you know many small groups gather there for mini-conventions? They bring customers into downtown Waukesha, just like what we are trying to do. They are an asset, folks. Every business go through transformation and growing pain, they are not an exception.

I will go on record to urge the mayoral candidates to not use Clarke Hotel as a negative campaign tool for the election, if you REALLY care about Waukesha. I know I will make a point to get the guys together to have lunch there once a while, just to show our support.

Do you know Clarke Hotel is a dog friendly hotel? I will make sure I tell GPA-Wisconsin people that for the annual greyhound gala!

Update: Hey, Black Trumpet in Clarke Hotel made the best fish fry list! (Thanks to Spring City Chronicle for reporting!) Now I really need to go check it out. HINT: There is an Early Bird pricing as well (4:30-5:30pm), and it is ALL YOU CAN EAT! Those are really dangerous words in my book... ;)

Once again, people are working really hard to make Waukesha better ( despite all the negative noise ), one merchant at a time. Let's eat local, buy local and shop local to show our support!

It is 8:30 am and I am hungry for Fish Fry!!!

The day after

Even though the absentee votes are not counted yet, the clear front runners in the Waukesha Mayoral race are Mr. Scrima and Mayor Nelson.

I had a chance to talk with Mr. Enriquez last night and he is truly a nice man. I look forward to have some further conversation regarding my mentor Bill Hanson. I also learned Bill's friend Walter who he had spirited conversations with and had visited the Wall in DC together, passed away three month ago. I am sure Big Steve, Bill and Walter are having some kind of debate in the big cigar bar in the sky right now. Rest in Peace. Another interesting character of Waukesha lost, like Mr. Enriquez said. I really think the "endorsements" of certain ultra conservatives hurt him, he is really a moderate and truly care about Waukesha. I hope he will try again in four years.

I also had a chance to meet former mayor Lombardi. She is a very nice and pleasant lady and I thanked her for moving the gazebo. Her legacy in Waukesha history is secured in my book. By the way, thanks to the host Kaytydids, it was like a super Sample Day and nice BBQ, soup and dessert! Also, thanks to the wonderful bartenders!!! You know who you are.

Folks, I am not pro-anything but pro-Waukesha. I will certainly keep an eye on this interesting race because the future of Waukesha is at stake!

Waukesha Mayoral Primary

Today is the voting day to narrow the field from five to two. I am Swiss on this one and I am waiting to see who will be the two left standing.

Since I do not live in the city, I do not have a vote, but I do encourage any of you who is to do so today. The future of Waukesha is in question.

I do have one bias regarding one candidate's position on tattoo parlors but so far the words on the street is that he is not one of the front runners. I have a feeling it will be Enriquez vs. Nelson in the end. Let's see if Georgie the Geek is right. I think if there is going to be an upset, it will be Scrima because his appeal to younger people and he is tech savvy.

Once again, my prediction is no way reflecting my view, I see the strong political dynamics of Waukesha clashing and I just want the best for Waukesha.

A love story in the making?

GPA-Wisconsin has a partnership with HAWS,and there are some beautiful greyhounds in there all the time. My sister-in-law Debbie and brother-in-law Jeff are looking for a new dog and they drove all the way from Fond Du Lac today to see some pure love with brown eyes!

They put in an application for this beautiful little girl, I am still trying to find out more about her through my contact at GPA-Wisconsin. Rachel and I also kinda connected with this little grey boy Eddie, he is just so sweet and we are just beating our heads on the wall and resisting the urge to sign up for him. There is also this kitty Linus, he is just a dream. It is so hard to walk into HAWS and not want to come home with another cat and a dog!

Stay tuned...

Update: Bad news, both Stella and Eddie are in final approval phase already. Good news: They are going to their forever home!!!!

See you in the Hall, Big Hurt!

Yesterday Frank Thomas announced his retirement. The clock started from his last game played in 2008 until he is eligible to be nominated to be in the baseball hall of fame.

Here is his very first MLB at bat. A pre-roid Sosa and is that B.J. Surhoff?

On an unrelated baseball item: Corey Hart won the case and a big raise!? Hey, you want to win your fans back? You better earn your pay!

Valentine's Day thoughts

I was outside of Walmart, and an older couple pull up and the wife got out of the car, screaming at the husband : "NOW I HAVE TO GO IN AND ACT HAPPY! (it's all your fault)" and headed in. Here is to you, pal, husbands of the world, been there, done that. Happy Valentine's Day.

As I was standing there waiting for the door to open at 7am, I was looking at the postings from Missing Children Network and there is Alexis S. Patterson. It had been almost 8 years now. Where she was last seen was by where my friend used to live on Hi-Mount and North, and she looks like my niece Kaytie when she was young. I guess someone should keep her in the our collective thoughts, wherever she might be, dead or alive.

You might want to know why I was standing there waiting for the door to open at Walmart at 7 am. I have to get a new phone card so I can call home to Taiwan to wish my parents Happy New Year. My cats chewed up my last one.

Have a wonderful day everyone! Happy Valentine's Day or Happy Chinese New Year!

Time warp

After a long day of work, Rachel and I decided to go grab some dinner. I had heard about this Chinese restaurant in town that is supposed to be big time award winner and had never checked it out. Tonight is the night.

It is in a quiet corner of Waukesha and Rachel used to work near by DECADES ago. (This time she said it herself!) The shopping center is really ancient and had been empty for a long time. When we walked in, the place was packed.

We were presented with the menu and I read through it. It was a typical American Chinese menu. I asked the waitress " Do you have a Chinese menu?" She looked at me, and said," This IS the Chinese menu, we have American food in the back of the menu." Rachel knew what I was asking, I was asking for an authentic Chinese menu as I would find in Peking House or Peony; she tried very hard not to laugh when she saw my puzzled face.

The place took me back to the 80's. It was like when Aunt Linda and Uncle John took me to their favorite place in Colorado Springs. It even reminded me China City on Main street many moons ago. This place is much better maintained however. The food is solid but far from best of anything. The service was very good.

The next question is WHY? I think even if the food is average or below, the good service will make a lot of people forget that. People are comfortable with the food since it is consistent for DECADES. People go to one spot, and do not seek out anything else nor know anything better existed. When I was in there, the place felt like a long lost supper club of the past, and that can be very very comforting for some.

I do think any long standing family business can be successful with a known location as long as the service is good, the place is well maintained in the decor of yester-years. It gives people no reason to change and seek out something new. If the food is as awesome as advertised, then it is just bonus! My best example will be Corpers' Five O'Clock Club. That is a classic in every way.

You just don't find anyone playing Sinatra and Chinese music in the same place anymore. I do not think I will ever return to this place but it was a treat as a flashback to the past.

Now tomorrow we will be going for some real Chinese food with Jessie and Betty, they are in for a treat!

Consequences of the Donuts Saturday

We are very sorry to cause a disturbance here at the West End. We will have more donuts next time!
