The
honor flight for local veterans was returning on Sunday Night at 9pm, Rachel and I decided we need to be there. When we arrived at the airport terminal, the place was packed already. We were handed flags and there were a band playing.
The flight returning from Washington D.C. was delayed however, but it did not dampen the crowd's spirit. Some passengers from other flights were even cheered as they were surprised coming around the corner, well, all except one guy wearing a Devin Hester jersey was booed, even though Hester did have a sensational touchdown catch for Da Bears.
At around 11pm, the veterans along with their guardians started to come out, and they were given a hero's welcome. Some were so surprised by the whole terminal full of welcoming party and the cheer, it was a very moving experience.
From their insignia, you can tell what they were doing in WWII, Korean and/or Vietnam war. I even saw one older gentleman with the patch showing that he served in China, likely the Flying Tigers, which was the shirt I was wearing. Yes, the history I read in books and watched in films, these guys made the history.
There were also B-17 bomber crews, which is unthinkable now that every time a B-17 went down over Europe, that was 10 guys in them and there were a lot of B-17 lost in WWII.
I am also glad to see Vietnam vets and Korean vets were there to get a hero's welcome. It might be a little overdue, but I hope they know they are appreciated.
I imagine Bill being there, other than he was not a fan of Charlie Sykes. One of the last things he did was taking a ride to see D.C., perhaps he knew his time was limited. Rachel and I were glad to honor him by being there. When we left the airport, it was about the time he passed two years ago. We think he was there in spirit for the welcome, the welcome he did not get coming home from Nam.
