9.30.11

Fellow blogger Sarah reported a rumor that a game stop type of store is going in on the building next to Main Street Plaza, the store front used to have antique fixtures. That should be a welcome sight for downtown gamers.

Someone else reported a rumor that Clarke Hotel found and will be taking out a lot of trash today, I am sure more detail to come.

Jason, Kelly and I went to test the brand new beer tapper system at Bodway's last night, it is pretty impressive. However, Fat Tire is Spotted Cow and Spotted Cow is Fat Tire, so you know. The other night I saw the former? most eligible bachelorette of West End there and I congratulated her from across the bar and she said Thank you... Can the rumor be true?

Moxie's is having $10 services on Diva Day, we are still trying to figure out what we are doing that day yet. My schedule is depended upon Brewers playoff schedule... If some of you wonder why I am looking a little rough these days, I am not shaving until they are done playing this season, perhaps it will be the return of the Fu Manchu.

Did anyone report on House of Guiness and if they are serving food yet? I have not been there since the early days, I think I owe the owners and the bartenders a visit. I did not know they were the first non-smoking bar in downtown Waukesha even before the ban.

Magellan's is catering for our Art Crawl reception tomorrow for Destruction of Innocence. Poppin on Broadway will provide the special Waukesha Tattoo blend popcorn... People are lining up already.

Too bad HBR and PBR were not part of the demonstration... Oh, wait, it is FFNL tonight! ;) How kool would it be if they do a drunken taser fight after that... So you know, HBR always has Mr. HBR's shoulder to lean on when she gets a little "tired". It is very sweet.

9.29.11

Let me just say that we will be fine with or without the West End Apartment project, we are positioned for either situation. Ken and his daughter were very nice and they listened to our concerns and suggestions. I still hope they would consider my rooftop dining idea to overlook the river, then one can swing another valet parking deal with the city.

It was very clear to some of us that it was a done deal, when the commission were urged to overlook the details and make rules more relaxed. Even though each apartment unit requires two cars parking but this project has only one, but the tenants with more than one car and their friends WILL walk across the river to park in the Waukesha State Bank lot? No first floor retailing because we have so much empty store fronts and we do not need more retail, but later someone supporting suggested that there is not a vacancy issue. I get it, it is a lot of tax for the city, the people connected to the project are some notables in downtown, but I recently learned a hard lesson that if you want something so bad and is willing to overlook a lot of details and flaws, then you do have to be prepared to face any consequences.

You want to attract young professionals, then the Noise Police needs to go away. Young people do not sleep at 8:30pm on the weekends. Don't like Rock 'N Roll for FFNL, well, that is just too bad. Too much drinking? Not young professionals...

By the way, HBR, the project is not short 20 parking spaces, it is 41. I know there is a vague solution thrown out there. The city can take the old Donna Lexa gallery space by Veteran Park and turn that into parking for the apartment project instead of angle parking on the street, which is kinda dangerous before that big turn.

Ken did kindly share with me that the way they construct the building will be more sound proof if we bring FFNL down to the West End, that is music to our ears. Mayor Scrima also said to me at the 4 pm meeting that when FFNL stop the music at 9pm, there should not be a noise issue.

Now it is very clear to us that we need to market more to young professionals at the West End and we will do so accordingly.

9.28.11

So everything comes down to the games today. Brewers won last night with Prince's monster 3 HR performance, but D-Backs came back from a 6-1 deficit in extra inning with a grand slam to keep pace with the crew. Cardinals and Braves are tied for Wild Card... Yeah, it will be an interesting day. Party next day and HBR will be there to report it.

RBC can not get away with it.

Perhaps he is stressed over this.

Tax is going up a little...

Good stuff! We are in a Meal on Wheel for lazy people program, it is called Feng's.

I think all the parties will be on Saturday night!

You don't want to miss this!

New rules on trash!

Wiggy did a mini twitter interview with me on FFNL.

Brien went on a blogging frenzy...

Gregg's final column? What happened? I wish only the best for him, my fellow Carroll alum and Salvation Army board member...

Larry next door is beginning to sell his stuff for retirement. John from Wisconsin House beat me to it on the snow blower. If anyone of you are tile guys, his trailer is supposed to be very nice. An auction on his carpet/tiles inventory should come after mid October...

Chef Anthony of Bodway's moved to Texas but the burger did not change. I took Jason our new artist there last night and he was impressed.

Big West End apartment meetings tonight... Stay tuned.

This Art Crawl we will have Magellan's catering for us. Pizza and beer, enough said, see you soon...

West End apartment project update

Just got words that Mayor Scrima did come through at the 11th hour. All the West End neighbors will get a preview from the developer at the City Hall tomorrow at 4pm.

I rescheduled my appointment just so I can see it before the Planning Commission meeting few hours later.

Thank you, Mayor Scrima. Better later than never.

9.27.11

I spent quite a bit of the night at Random Twig. Kodiak was having some special card printed with an old school press in there. It was a very interesting process and I did see a painting I like very much. Now I just need to come up with some $$$...

We then went to El Sol de Mexico for dinner and it was 99 cents tacos after 9pm. Kodiak threw down a $20 and asked me to put in the tip. I said, BUT the total bill is only $12! :) We were very happy with everything.

Local Hispanic leader in Hispanic Heritage Month.

Rooming house is the target?

No words on the new design for the West End apartment project, I am afraid Mayor Scrima is either forgotten about us or he is out of the loop. I guess we will all go up tomorrow night to the planning commission and be surprised again, I hope it is a pleasant one.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR-Mr. Trench is back!

POLICE BLOTTER-Nosie Police did not work, now Parking Police! Well, parking is a problem, but setting up for FFNL is different than all the same cars playing parking game on Main instead of on offsite lots everyday.

Okay, something funny to start you off on a good day!

Oh, I am hooked...

The Great Waukesha Blackout

Okay, there were no rioting or cannibalism as Wiggy tweeted, but the sudden lost of electricity around noon was a big deal in Waukesha.

It was right after some thunder and lightning and then the emergency lights at the shop came on. I was the only one still working because I had my power backup set up from previous experience and was able to finish what I needed to do.

Fortunately Barry was between appointments, Kelly had her son's birthday, Rich and Jason were at the Milwaukee Tattoo Convention, so we were not really in a jam. I called my next two appointments with my cell phone, and eventually tattooed one of them later in the day.

Moxie had to move chairs close to the window to do whatever they can for their customers, but because we are all so technically advanced, we can't see our online appointment books without power.

No TV, no Internet, no digital phone... That is the digital age for you, folks... We know we will be okay because we still have some coffee and donuts...

By 3 pm the power came back on, we went on to have a really busy Saturday afternoon... However, I think we will invest more in those power back up units...

9.24.11

I was told yesterday once again about my upcoming "ownership" of certain downtown dining establishment. Once again, NO, I AM NOT, please direct the overdue bills to whomever is legally responsible.

Sorry, I am still in Brewers playoff fever to think about this...

I am trying to picture HBR sneaking up on someone in high heels... ;)

What is coming up next week. The O'Brien's apartment project is up again. Mayor Scrima had personally promised the West End neighbors that we will see and discuss the new design before the meeting, we were surprised last time. Please keep your promise, Mayor Scrima.

Desperate people do desperate things these days...

0!

We are the champions, my friends...

When Ryan Braun worked the count to 3-1 with 2 men on, everyone in the Miller Park was thinking fastball right down Wisconsin Ave. Braun did not miss it and the home run was so far and high it bounced off the scoreboard like a batting practice ball...

We were there and it was historic, especially when all the Brewers and Brewers fans were cheering for the hated Cubs to beat the hated Cardinals....

Playoff, here we come! ( Having second row tickets behind home plate, even though they are in terrace box...PRICELESS!)

9.23.11

Another no news is good news day.

HBR is busy with guns and blowing up stuff. A fair warning, she is out there tonight looking for some shotgun action... I am leaving town!

What is this about?

Good event turn out.

Battle of the bands.

Wisconsin Foodie Girl Kelly and I talked about this...

Erik is right, we have yet to see one ad from Freeman come in. The Freeman readership at Carroll U. needs to be pushed.

9.22.11

No news is good news, I guess. Yet it is the calm before the storm... When you look at a messy situation from within, there are all these emotional attachments but when a lawyer sees it, it is black and white, I suppose an accountant sees it that way too. I remember when I was working on Tim from Iron Horse, he was talking on the phone with his attorney often, he just said "Hey, I have a lot of business dealings and I deal with lawyers a lot..." Just a cost of doing business... Despite any setback outside of real estate, tattooing, and gallery business, Ms. Kool and I are still committed to invest in Waukesha, promote downtown and West End, and we are not going anywhere...

Nice help for all the honest hard working people.

It is going the right way.

My apology to Ruby

Ruby Tuesday said...

Perhaps the inquiry into the question of a recent remarriage didn't go deep enough. While he may have reassured you he did not wed in CA, one may question if he "tied the knot" during his recent disappearance to the tropical island of Hawaii. There seems to be a distinct clue that bells may have chimed under a beautiful sunset on a quiet beach.

I've just found this caught in the spam filter from 8.26.11. Is this a comment on Mr. Otto's status? Is he holding out on us?

How about a 2 for 1

9.21.11

A lot of interesting items at the West End Artist meeting, but I was too distracted by Magellan's pizza to write anything down. M2 was filled with purple balloons and purple frosted cupcakes; it was Lynn from Almont Gallery's birthday! Make sure you go up and wish her a happy birthday when you see her.

Duchess of People was there and she is almost ready for the Royal Wedding. I was very concerned for her but her middle initial does not start with an "S" so no disaster there.

Artsy bike rack is still being discussed and I think help is on the way for the Biker Gang, there are still a lot of people committed to make Waukesha bike friendly. We do take it personal when we are not named as one of the bike friendly cities...

BID put out a nice brochure about Public Art in downtown Waukesha. Perhaps there will be more walking tours for visitors to see everything. Can we talk Mr. Otto into bring back the birds or make more?

Artfest was a hit and there is now talk of expanding for more artists, I think a nice sculpture garden in front of Galleria Edge with the river walk as a backdrop would be very nice. It is great for BID and WEAA to work seamlessly together to better downtown Waukesha, I think people are noticing the positive chi everywhere.

I was not invited to the first informational of the new city "chamber" but Man on the Street said they had good food there. The fee structure is in tiers, I think I will wait and see. Perhaps HBR will do a follow up report on all of this dual chamber of commerce thing in da Freeman.

Flushed. Or not...

The new Walmart and Target are too much for Kmart. At least that part of Sunset is still a destination because of Pat's Rib Place.

BID budget- That kinda sucks for Wendy, she did a very good job and we appreciated her effort when BID was in transition.

There she goes...

Don't be the first...

POLICE BLOTTER-There is some kind of electric power beamed into my house as well! But it went through the meter first... :(

9.20.11

Salvation Army Civic Dinner was held at the Carroll U. ballroom last night, President Doug was the opening speaker. He was very proud of the fact that four alumni and one staff member of Carroll U. sit on the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He also reported that for freshmen orientation, the value of service was one of the key point to push across. The result was 700+ students helped 27 organization on many projects in a three days period.

The Eagle fire chief was the keynote speaker and he talked about his own experience on going from the one helping people to be the one needing the help. Salvation Army was there for the community hit by tornado and all the volunteers were all striving for the goal to do most good.

One side note, someone asked me to book a banquet room at Clarke Hotel in the winter, I was puzzled. She said she was told that I am the owner of the hotel, I just have to laugh how the rumor mill works...

Three years ago today Bill left his broken body behind and was freed.

Please think of him if you had the honor of knowing him. He was one of the guys, one of the dying breed of Main Street.

I wish I can still sit and talk with him and share his wisdom on things.

Thank you.

Alisha from Pat's Rib Place kept telling me about these black bean cakes from Swig, rumor has it that Auntie O's personal chef requested the recipe because it is also Oprah's favorite item there. Well, I finally had a chance to try them last night and OMG, it is as advertised. It reminded me a little bit of Chinese red bean deserts but not dense and sweet, it is just awesome. The chicken wonton is also out of this world, and it is just about all chicken with a hint of curry. I looked at Ms. Kool and asked how come we do not go there more often...

The occasion was Jennifer's birthday Party, M.H. even had her model a stunning dress from the J Lo collection, which is now available at Kohl's along with the Marc Anthony collection. Ms. Kool is all happy that M.H. will put her on the friends and family discount there... I am sure she will be "saving" me lots and lots of money. All the usual suspects came: Sham from Flux Design was all happy about something big he can not tell me contractually. Wendy from Biz Journal did not bring my puppy pal Ruby. :( Catherine the private eye, Stephanie the designer, Tim of the famous Iron Horse Hotel and Liz from Flux Design are all there as well. Jennifer's art is all over Swig because she is the permanent artist there. Her exhibition next year at Galleria Edge will be highly anticipated.

(Sorry, Alisha, I was gonna bring you some black bean cakes but they did not make it out of the party and got into my tummy instead...)

Okay, here is the news:

The WDBA meeting was last night, the biggest news came out of it was that People's Park has a revised reopening date of mid-November. People are certainly feeling the sweet potato fries deprivation.

River's End Gallery expansion is still ongoing, but the good news is that a building permit is finally coming. Three Sisters' is almost completed the move to Clinton Street, I have to go and check it out soon. Bieg Boutique is going to have a huge photo spread in a magazine and they will be using Downtown Waukesha as a backdrop; that is awesome!

Mr. Barta, "Jeff" kindly asked me about Georgie the whippet, we really appreciate all the good wishes. He has a serious heart condition and will require a lot of care from this point on. We are rearranging our daily routine for him; it is a package deal, we just have to roll with it.

PSA from postal worker side of family

As most of you know and some of you moreso than others, the United States Postal Service has been in the news quite a bit lately. For the most part you have probably heard that the USPS is broke and can not pay its bills and that it may have to close down or cut down on the number of delivery days per week.
The first part of this is mostly inaccurate and therefore the second part is not really the case either.
The truth is that due to Congressional action the USPS is required to pre-fund retiree health benefits at the rate of $5.5 billion per year over the next 6 years. This will not only fully fund current employees but also employees that have yet to be hired. No other federal agency and surely no private sector entity is required or needs to follow such an aggressive plan.
Additionally, it has been determined that USPS has overfunded one of its retirement/pension funds by anywhere from $50-70 billion dollars. If the USPS could recoup this money it could fully fund the retiree health fund and also cover its existing debt. There is currently a bill in Congress, HR 1351 is its number, that would do just this. This bill currently has about 200 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle but it is languishing in committee and not coming up for vote.
This link will give you access to a petition which encourages your U.S. Representative to vote in favor of HR 1351. It would be greatly appreciated if you could print some of these out and have your friends, neighbors and family members sign it. After you have done that, please forward them to me so we can present them to the Reps on September 27th. http://www.saveamericaspostalservice.org/downloads/petition-save_americas_postal_service.pdf
Thanks so much for your support.

Downtown Haunted House

*Email from BID

The BID Office just received information regarding how the businesses downtown can get involved with the Six Fee Under Haunted House. Please see the message below from event organizer Lenny Miller:

Dear BID Business and Property Owners:

I have met most of you at one time or another. If I have not met you, I am looking forward to meeting you in the near future. My name is Lenny Miller and I represent a group of people along with the Freemason Lodge of Waukesha. We are developing a Haunted House as a fundraiser for the Freemasons for their philanthropic endeavors and the restoration of their building. This haunt will be open on Friday and Saturday October 21-22 and 28-29 from around 6:00 pm till the last soul gets through. (Ticket sales will stop around 11:00 pm) we are hoping to draw 3,000-5,000 people. This is around average for other haunts of this caliber in the area.

As a part of the attraction we would like to offer our customers/victims a “coupon” of sorts. If they make it through the maze of tunnels and horrors and manage to keep their flyer, we will present them with a wristband. This wristband will have “Six Feet Under” de-bossed on one side and “Downtown Waukesha” de-bossed on the other (if they do not keep or if they lose their flyer they can purchase a wristband for $1.00).

This is where you come in, we are hoping you would support us by offering something in return for our patrons showing you the wristband. I understand some off you may need something to put into the cash register. We do plan to have a “Coupon” sheet to hand out with the wristband. Along with the coupon sheet we will have a “Bounty Hunter” Promotional Participant board with participants and what they are offering.

Attached is a mock-up of a poster that could be placed in your window to show you are a Bounty Hunter Promotional Participant. Also attached is a form as to what you would like to offer. If you could fill this out and email it back to me that would be great. As an added bonus Bounty Hunter” Promotional Participant will be listed on our website (www.sixftunder.com) as well as our facebook page.

One last thing, we are asking for your help in promoting this. One way to help is to let us display a poster or even put a stack of flyers in your location. I or one of my colleagues will be around in the coming weeks to answer any questions you may have as well as drop off some flyers/posters.

Thank you for your time.

9.10.11

I was watching CNN when it said a small airplane hit one of the towers on 9.11.2001. When the second plane came in, I was thinking, Wow, some air traffic controller is really messing it up. Fog of war I guess, I never thought the towers are coming down, and I was calling my friends in NYC and my flight attendant friends to make sure they are okay. I was actually scheduled to go to NYC in October but Midwest airline gave everyone a refund.

Kodiak and I were there one year after, by this time they are rebuilding the subway deep underneath already. When you talked to people there, they just said they will never forget the smell. The missing people banners are still on the St. Paul church, but I was really mad about the vendors out there doing fancy Chinese name writing for tourists... It was just quiet at Ground Zero, it was a giant hole in every one's heart.

I think 9-11 is on every one's mind, orange alert I guess.

Ms. Kool and I went to Union House last night, and you just do not have anything but first class there. Curt is always awesome and he made Rachel one of his famous Brandy Old Fashion Sweet with extra bitters. We had Oyster Rockefeller, and we both went with the wild game of some Aussie Roo tenderloin, and finish up with a chocolate cherry bread pudding. We were very very happy with everything... as usual.

Busy Saturday in downtown Waukesha, see you out there or come in and say hi!

Georgie's blood work came back clear which is a relief, but he lost another three pounds. We are doing what we can and we think he is doing better.

Today is Ms. Kool and my 17th wedding anniversary. No FFNL for me. :)

Tomorrow is the Mega Saturday, are you ready?

I did buy one of the biggest item at the Art Fest last year, it was a magnificent metal statue of the unofficial Wisconsin state bird. I hope to find some gems this year as well!

Les Paul memorial dedication too!

Kinda got pretty tense in the end there, is that necessary? By the way, the Cialis commercial during the game made me think of Brien... well, let me clarify, the hot air balloon part of it. ;)

MOXIE is expanding their roster and they now have Kelly and Trisha on the team. I had a pedi done yesterday and you don't know what you are missing, guys...

Georgie is resting a lot, but he needs to pee all the time. We are taking turns to stay with him... It is tough when we both have a full schedule. They are pretty much like kids, right? By the way, thanks for all the good wishes, it means a lot to us.

P.S. My sincere apology to HBR... totally missed this gem of a hot topic.

I am not in a position to comment much but here it is. When you owe people money and not being honest, you do not have many friends.

Labor day means doing absolutely nothing... I am a labor too.

Daisy Chain was rocking at Bosco's Saturday night and we left after the first set due to old age but they were really good.

Les Paul dedication-Since the route to Prairie Home will be used more for visitors, how about fixing up West Ave and put the old fashion street lights there as a continuation of Main?

Landmark or no landmark.

The walk is coming.

HBR meets officer Mahoney... This should be an interesting series.

Here comes the Bypass!

Erik reports... exciting!

Nice... She showed the bear who is the boss.

Disturbing, but at least it is the truth...

Pita and Pan has to endure until 9-12 to get phone/internet service, but cable should be back on today. Thanks, Time Warner business class...

I had a Bear burger last night, and I was having a tough time finishing it... Eat is right, the Fearsome Threesome is impossible.

9.1.11

As promised... We are really honored to have Wis and Gerry showing here.

Water! What a great subject for Carroll U. this year.

FFNL preview.

Wiggy on FFNL.

POLICE BLOTTER-Noise Police has two aldermen involved, and this is what Wiggy thinks.

Some downtown biz owners are voicing frustration with the current city building inspector requiring things outside of the code, and it slows all current ongoing or planned expansion of downtown businesses. Perhaps someone (hint) might want to do a news report on it...

There are also a lot of other undercurrent in downtown Waukesha right now and I am afraid nothing good is gonna come of it and I can not swim...

BUT, today is Jason, our newest tattoo artist's first day! Sorry, he is booked for September and October...
