I wish I have a photo of the roasted chicken with amaretto glaze from Gen 5, but it smelled so good that I ate it before I thought of a camera. It is not like a store bought roasted chicken, this is way different... It takes a little longer time to prepare but it is worth the wait...

Sarah's new entry...

Good read...

Not much is gonna change until Mayor Scri-Manipulation is out of office... (By the way, Wiggy has another fan in SOUND OFF of Freeman...)

Scrima comments

Ah, yes, here we go again. There’s a large headline belittling Mayor Jeff Scrima for his absence at the Christmas Parade (Thursday, Nov. 15, by
Sarah Pryor). It has been clear for the last three years that is a well-deserved break for him that he spends with his family.

Now, let’s add James Wigderson’s comments to the mix. “Perhaps this year he can be shamed into attending the biggest annual civic event in Waukesha.” Really, James? This is the big one? Not Waukesha’s Freeman Friday Night Live all summer long? Also, your comment that Scrima made a “nonsense remark” ... reminds me of your word “emasculate” directed at the district attorney. I vigorously ask you to backpedal and join our mayor in costume for the Santa 5K run/walk on Dec. 9 to benefit the Salvation Army. Stop running at the mouth and put your money there like our mayor does.

 Hot Bread
 Antipasti Plate
 Nona Salad
 Greek Rotini
 Asian Peanut Fettuccine
 Seafood Linguine
 Wild Mushroom Rigatoni

Cinnamon Bread

Here are the photos of the meal we had at Gen5. We were nicely surprised by the Greek Rotini, it was light and flavorful with each bite. The Seafood Linguine was also one of our top choices. The real portion for the pasta will be entree portion. The Duck Mojo is on the new menu, so is the Salmon which we had a while ago, I would recommend both. There is also a roasted chicken as an entree... I want to try it tonight!!! (Thanks to Chef Jeff and everyone at Gen 5, it was an awesome night out with Ms. Kool.)

Crazy stuff...

CRANE GAME

Kendal Lofts construction brings changes to West Main Street

By Sarah Pryor

Freeman Staff

WAUKESHA – Drive down West Main Street in downtown Waukesha during the next few months and you’re bound to notice a couple of things: the hulking crane looming over the area and the construction barrels governing traffic as Third Ward-style apartment complex Kendal Lofts is being built.

“Things are right on schedule, and weatherpermitting, we’re thinking July 1 for completion and occupancy,” said developer Ken Miller.

The next few months could feel even longer for nearby businesses affected by the construction, such as Moxie Beauty Lounge at 443 W. Main St., who will lose several parking spaces as construction continues.

“We lost six spaces on our side of the road, but our other parking across the street has been gone since construction began,” said co-owner Sabrina Hildebrant. “For us, it’s just hard because we don’t really have any other parking.”

Hildebrant said the parking situation in downtown Waukesha is already sticky, and the added construction doesn’t help.

“It’s so confusing what they have going on down here that I just saw a woman drive on the wrong side of the road,” Hildebrant said, adding that she was frustrated that they weren’t made aware earlier of the changes. “It’s throwing us for a loop.”

Miller said he’s hopeful the crane will be gone and the traffic and parking will be completely unobstructed by March, but Hildebrant said with sales of gift certificates and products, December can be a make-or-break month in the salon business.

“We’re in the industry of luxury, and the minute we’re not luxurious because people have to walk to find parking in the snow and cold, that’s the minute they don’t keep coming back anymore,” she said.

Miller said he hopes Hildebrant and other affected business owners will be patient, because he anticipates a big payoff once the 42-unit building is occupied.

“We apologize for the obstruction but once people move in, your business will multiply,” he said. “You’ll hopefully have lots of new customers who will get their hair done there.”

In the interim, Hildebrant said she’s working with her colleagues to figure out how to keep the intrusion as minimal as possible.

“We’re trying to work within our business to let people know where to park,” she said.

( Editor's note: Still no one talked to us except a cop asked a customer to move her car. The sign situation needs to be fixed. People are still driving on wrong lane at times and some way too fast.)

Rich had a close call on Saturday as he turned into the WTC parking lot, someone was driving on the wrong lane and almost hit him head on. He also got one finger saluted even though he had the right-of-way.  I investigated last night, the problem is the road sign posted near Mainstream, it asks the drivers to go left, while the sign on the opposite corner by Veterans' Park asks the drivers to go right. It is confusing and quite dangerous.

Tonight is the soft reopening of Gen 5! A special training dinner is planned and Ms. Kool and I will be there!!! Can't wait to do some "reporting"...

Common Council narrowly approves latest BID appointment

Citizen accuses mayor of plans to disband the BID

By Sarah Pryor

Freeman Staff

WAUKESHA – In the latest chapter in a saga that’s been going on for two months, the Common Council narrowly approved Mayor Jeff Scrima’s appointment of downtown restaurant owner Sandy Cianciolo to the Business Improvement District Board during a Tuesday night meeting.

The council voted 7-6 to approve Cianciolo, who owns Mia’s Italian Restaurant.

Cianciolo is the seventh appointee to the board, creating the quorum that will allow the board to hold regular meetings for the first time since September.

All but two board members resigned en masse after former Executive Director Meghan Sprager left her position citing a hostile work environment at the hands of the board’s leaders.

Since then, Scrima and the Common Council have been at odds over appointments, with the council denying several and requesting Scrima to bring an alderperson forward to serve on the board, and Scrima accusing the council of causing gridlock.

Tuesday night, Alderman Duane Paulson recommended in favor of approving Cianciolo, calling the move an “olive branch” between the council and the mayor.

Alderman Paul Ybarra expressed frustration that the mayor has yet refused to appoint a common council member to the board, but City Administrator Ed Henschel said in a memo that Scrima is willing to nominate a council member to the board if the council approves Cianciolo.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, downtown resident Vicky Hekkers said that Scrima told her in October 2010, soon after his election, that he planned to dissolve the BID and hand the proceeds and control of downtown to “two merchants” who ultimately were named by Sprager as the ones who were bullying and threatening her. Scrima denied the allegations.

“Vicky Hekkers is making this up out of her head,” he said.

Some council members were worried about Cianciolo’s self-described “fiery” personality and his intentions for the future of the BID, but he promised to channel his passion into a positive outlet and even said he hoped to expand the BID a few blocks in either direction in order to grab several more businesses.

“What are we doing down here, we’re tearing downtown apart,” Cianciolo said, expressing a desire to move forward from the past.

Ultimately, Scrima agreed to bring a council member appointment before the council at its next meeting.

Cianciolo is the seventh appointee to the board, creating the quorum that will allow the board to hold regular meetings for the first time since September.

I know no one cares, but I'll say it again - but there is not a quorum.  A quorum is defined in the BID bylaws as a majority of the directors in office.  For seven members to make a quorum, there would have to be thirteen board members in office.

The bylaws require a board of thirteen, period.  There is still not a functional board of directors.

5 Diamonds annexation dead?

Scrima makes one additional BID appointment

By Sarah Pryor

Freeman Staff

WAUKESHA – The Common Council has a lot on its plate for its Tuesday meeting, including the adoption of the 2012 budget and Mayor Jeff Scrima’s latest proposed Business Improvement District Board appointment.

One thing the council may not have on its plate is the annexation of contested youth baseball park 5 Diamonds on Les Paul Parkway in the Town of Waukesha. According to a memo from City Attorney Curt Meitz, since the annexation wasn’t accepted by a two-thirds vote, the petition is essentially rejected. The Common Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 201 Delafield St.

At the last council meeting, Scrima cast the tiebreaking vote in favor of annexation, but Meitz’s memo says state statutes dictate that it doesn’t matter.

“If the petition is rejected by a failure of the governing body to accept the petition by two-thirds vote, there is no further action,” his memo states, adding that the matter can be brought back for reconsideration if someone who voted on the prevailing side (against annexation) makes a motion to bring it before the council at the next meeting.

If that doesn’t happen, the council could make a motion to rescind within 120 days of the filing of the annexation paperwork.

If the 120 days expires, the petition could be re-filed with the city clerk at any time, but the council would have to suspend its rules to act on the matter, because current council rules prohibit raising a matter that has been acted upon from being brought up again until the subsequent third Tuesday in April, the memo states.

The park has drawn the ire of the Town Board and neighbors alike for allegedly violating its conditional use permit by leaving lights on too late and starting too early, but park owners have contended that the Town Board is being too strict and insensitive to the children who play there.

BID appointments

Scrima submitted just one name for appointment to the BID Board this time around: Mia’s owner Sandy Cianciolo.

The Common Council has approved Scrima’s appointment of Carroll University Chief Financial Officer Ron Lostetter, downtown attorney Nick Martinez and People’s Park owner Jim Taylor as well as the reappointment of Berg Management owner Bill Huelsman. It has denied several of his other appointments, suggested additional names and asked him to come forward with a slate that includes at least one council member as well.

“Unfortunately the Council is in gridlock,” Scrima said in an email Friday morning. “For over a month I have submitted several names of qualified citizens to serve on the downtown BID taxing board.”

All but two members of the BID Board resigned in September amid controversy surrounding former Executive Director Meghan Sprager’s resignation. Sprager passed out a scathing nine-page letter outlining the alleged hostile work environment she suffered at the hands of some BID Board members.

2013 budget, water

The council will host a public hearing on the 2013 budget as well as the 2014-2018 five-year plan. If approved as presented, the budget will have a 0.2 percent levy increase.

It also will discuss approving the modification of the letter of intent from Oak Creek, which makes technical corrections to the previously adopted letter.

Wiggy, NO Mayor Scrima again for the Christmas Parade...It is a tradition...

Mayor contributes to BID mess, drags feet on appointees

City of Waukesha Mayor Jeff Scrima has been busy trying to avoid responsibility for the Business Improvement District debacle. The BID still does not have enough members to make up a quorum, thanks to the mayor.

Scrima has ignored the wishes of the property owners, the very people being voluntarily taxed to fund the BID. They have made suggestions for possible BID Board members, only to be ignored by Scrima. Instead, Scrima made a nonsense remark about the First Amendment and promised to “go forward with austerity.”

Scrima’s brief stay at the Harvard business seminar at taxpayer expense did not improve Scrima’s odd way of communicating. He forgot to add “vigorously.”

Scrima has ignored the wishes of the Common Council members who have asked that some of their members be appointed to the BID. Instead, Scrima proposed members for the BID he knew would be questionable to the council. When they rejected some of them, Scrima attempted to blame the council members for the lack of members on the BID Board.

Let’s not forget that Scrima, along with the hapless Alderman Roger Patton, engineered the mass vacancies to avoid, in Patton’s words, airing “dirty laundry” at a Common Council meeting.

It was Scrima’s favorites on the BID Board that were accused of creating a hostile working environment for former Executive Director Meghan Sprager. They resigned (after consulting with the mayor) before the council could investigate, creating the current vacancy crisis.

Now the mayor is intentionally dragging his feet in finding BID Board appointees. The only “austerity” in this mess is the mayor’s willingness to take accountability.

Stamping his feet in front of the council like Rumpelstiltskin will not help matters, but it does serve to remind the council, and the public, of what type of mayor with which they are dealing.

*** One of the consequences of the recent election is the changes of leadership at the state Legislature. Among the changes, state Sen. Chris Larson was chosen minority leader by the Democrats.

At least Larson ought to provide some entertainment. Republicans were openly skeptical, even mocking, of the idea of Larson as Senate minority leader.

Some Democrats must be feeling uneasy at the rise of the limelight-seeking Larson. A prominent Democrat told me, “Let the era of grandiose pronouncements all self-consciously prepared for future inscription on stone monuments begin.”

*** Congratulations to everyone who participated in the village of Wales Municipal Chili Cook-off. The event raised over $400 in cash and nearly five barrels of food for a local food pantry.

I say congratulations to everyone, because the chili this year was the best ever. But it is a competition and someone has to win, so special congratulations goes out to Pauline Wigderson, whose vegetarian chili received the most votes overall from the public.

It was good to see future state Sen. Paul Farrow and state Rep. Chris Kapenga there with their families to enjoy some chili. Perhaps we’ll see some legislative entries next year?

*** Speaking of Farrow, don’t forget to vote Dec. 4. Yes, one more election, but you don’t want the Democrats to sneak a write-in candidate into office while you’re not looking, do you?

Farrow told me Sunday that the elections to replace him in the Assembly should coincide with the spring elections. Meanwhile the line of candidates to replace him is looking like the line at Space Mountain in Disney World.

*** The Christmas Parade is this Sunday. Perhaps given all of the chaos Mayor Jeff Scrima has caused downtown, perhaps this year he can be shamed into attending the biggest annual civic event in Waukesha. Yes, even bigger than GuitarTown.

For the rest of us that are attending, remember to bring your pennies. Girl Scout troops 2959 and 4184 are collecting pennies at the parade to help the Christmas Clearing House charity.

By fun coincidence, Billy Holiday recorded “Pennies from Heaven” on Nov. 19, 1936. So look for the Girl Scout float with the “Pennies from Heaven” theme to donate. There will be a giant piggy bank float, too.
