I was told a lot of people came down with flu after the End of the World party, and right now I am a prime suspect of being the dreaded Ebola Monkey in one of the theories... I did not have the violent flu symptoms as everyone described but a bad case of cough now diagnosed as Bronchitis, BUT I did have a flu shot so perhaps my symptoms were super mild compare to everyone else... Anyhow, I am sorry if it was me that got everyone a very sicky Christmas as a parting gift.... Caring is Sharing I guess... :(

First meeting of new BID Board planned for next month

Group will discuss operating plan, budget, more

By Sarah Pryor

Freeman Staff

WAUKESHA – In its first meeting since all but two members resigned amid controversy in September, the newly appointed Business Improvement District Board will convene in two weeks at City Hall.

According to an agenda distributed by City Administrator Ed Henschel last week, the eight-member BID Board will elect officers, discuss
the 2013 operating plan and budget, hear comments from the public and more at 4 p.m. Jan. 10. in Room 207 of City Hall.

In the past, BID Board meetings have been held at The Rotunda or at the BID’s Grand Avenue office. Henschel was out of the office Wednesday and didn’t return a call for comment to explain the rationale behind the venue change.

At the last Common Council
meeting, that body approved Mayor Jeff Scrima’s appointment of Alderman Vance Skinner. The move came after nearly three months of back-andforth between the council and mayor over his appointments to the board.

Skinner joins Bill Huelsman and Natalie Walters, the only two of the formerly 13-member board who didn’t resign, as well as attorney Nick Martinez, People’s Park owner Jim Taylor, Carroll University CFO Ron
Lostetter, Mia’s owner Sandy Cianciolo and Henschel to make up the new board.

Skinner was Scrima’s second attempt at adding an alderman to the board, after the Common Council denied the appointment of downtown Alderman Roger Patton. Many council members cited concerns that Patton had resigned from the board once before,
as well as Patton’s public admission that he and Scrima had orchestrated the board’s mass resignations to avoid publicly “airing dirty laundry” in the wake of former Executive Director Meghan Sprager’s departure.

At one of the final meetings of the former BID Board in September, Sprager distributed a nine-page letter detailing months of alleged abuse she’d received at the hands of former BID Board members, including having her car keyed and having rumors spread about her having an affair with a downtown attorney.

The agenda for the new
BID Board’s first meeting doesn’t indicate that the board will discuss any of Sprager’s allegations, though it does include an item for “any other business as allowed by law.”

A NEW DOWNTOWN FIXTURE

Brew pub opens today; brewing begins next month

By Darryl J. Enriquez

Special to The Freeman

W
AUKESHA – The city’s first brew pub is slated to open today; however, beer fanciers must wait until mid-January to sip a Totem Pole Brown, a Bubbler Brew or a Wizard Weiss beer.

The Fixture Brewing Co., 716 Clinton St., is the foamy endeavor of Stephen Fix, a 31-year-old graduate of Milwaukee Lutheran High School.

The Fix family became interested in downtown when Stephen’s father, Matthew, sought a building with bar-business potential. At the time, Stephen was working for an advertising firm but longed to own a tavern.

The Fixes bought the building that once was the Totem Pole Bowling Alley and have owned it for nearly a decade. Stephen Fix opened his first bar there, the Main Stage, when downtown’s renaissance was in its infancy.

After four years, Fix left the Main Stage and opened a club in Bay View.

“Pub brewing has been my dream,” he said.

Fix said he was unsuccessful in realizing his pub brewing dream at the Bay View club, so he turned his attention back to the Waukesha location. Most of his brewing device is now in place, but he’s missing a few key parts. Delivery is expected by mid-January.

“We want to do the whole brewery thing in Waukesha because the downtown has changed from when Main Stage closed,” Fix said.

The downtown “has really turned around” since the Main Stage days and
Fix said he now sees the central business district as a good business opportunity.

“We’ve been working on this place since June,” Fix said.

When the brewery is cooking, Fix intends to ferment three favorite beer
recipes that he’s named Totem Pole Brown, Bubbler Brew, and Wizard Weiss.

In the meantime, Fix will serve bottled and tap beer, wine and mixed drinks. In the spring, Fix says he intends to open a kitchen. Pool and darts are available.
He also will feature jazz, blues and cover bands once a week.

“It won’t be a loud rock bar like it once was,” Fix said. “I want this to be more than just a hangout. It’ll be a place where people can talk and do more than just listen to the band.”

Alderman Skinner appointed to BID board

WAUKESHA – As suggested by the Common Council, an alderman was appointed to the Waukesha Downtown Business Improvement District board during Tuesday’s
meeting. Alderman Vance Skinner was suggested by Mayor Jeff Scrima and then was approved by the Common Council on Tuesday. Previously, the council denied Scrima’s appointment of downtown Alderman Roger Patton, with council members citing concern that Patton had already resigned from the board and also had a hand in convincing several others to resign to avoid “dirty laundry” from being aired in public.

Scrima said all of the aldermen who were present at Tuesday’s meeting voted for appointing Skinner, although there were a few who were absent due to illness.

Skinner did not return a call for comment before deadline Wednesday. Skinner, the 8th District alderman, recently announced that he’ll run for re-election when his term expires in April. Former 8th District Alderman Emanuel Vitale is also running for the seat.

With the addition of Skinner to the BID board, there are now eight members. Scrima said there were enough members for a quorum prior to Skinner’s appointment. He said that one of the members, City Administrator Ed Henschel, is putting together the board’s first meeting time, which appears to be in early January.

The other members are Bill Huelsman, Natalie Walters, Ron Lostetter, Nick Martinez, Jim Taylor and Sandy Cianciolo.

Before the upheaval on the BID board, during which all but two members resigned in the wake of former Executive Director Meghan Sprager leaving her post, there were 13 members.
